Spending £78m on Premier League "next big thing" is a an expensive and major risk for Liverpool - Opinion

Liverpool have lost out on signing Crystal Palace defender Crystal Palace and have now been urged to go out and get Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.

Reports suggest Liverpool are now prepared to submit a £78m to sign van de Ven amid their major need for a new central defender.

Talk has also surrounded Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and his desire to move abroad. The 26-year-old would be perfect for Liverpool but if they want Premier League experience, van de Ven would be a good fit.

The only thing to consider is if the Dutcman’s injury history is too much of a red flag.

Amid talk of a bid for van de Ven, Liverpool have been urged to go out and add him to their squad.

*“Here’s the thing, if I’m Liverpool I’m going after van de Ven,*” Jason Cundy told talkSPORT following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield on Saturday.

“That’s what I would do, I would absolutely go all out. They lost out on Guehi, Van de Ven is the next big thing at centre-half.

“He’s perfect for Liverpool if they want to play a high line. I’m going straight after him.”

Is van de Ven’s injury record a red flag?

Liverpool are no stranger to injuries to centre-backs.

Joe Gomez may leave the club in the summer but it would be off the back of one of the most injury-torn careers of all time. The Englishman has been almost perennially injured at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate is also quite injury-prone. This season he has actually struggled more for form than for fitness.

And to make matters worse, exciting new Italian defender Giovanni Leoni tore his ACL and will be out for the whole season.

So it’s vital Liverpool get things right in the market next.

Since joining Tottenham in 2023, Micky van de Ven has had seven injuries. He has missed a total of 48 games for club and country across a span of 210 days.

If Liverpool are going to spend £78m on a new centre-back, they better be certain it’s worthit.

Remember, the last time (and only time) Liverpool spent £70m+ on a central defender, they got Virgil van Dijk. The bar is a lot higher now.
