After Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, Premier League champions Liverpool now turn their focus to Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Marseille in the Champions League.
Arne Slot’s side sit ninth in the table, level on points with three teams above them, and a win could leave qualification firmly in their own hands heading into the final matchday.
Ligue 1 side Marseille are 16th, three points clear of the cut-off for the top 24, and will take confidence into the game given their recent form.
Following their weekend victory over Angers, head coach Roberto De Zerbi also looked ahead to the visit of Liverpool, setting the stage for an intriguing contest at the Orange Velodrome.
The former Brighton boss said: “Liverpool is a very strong team. So we’ll have to improve even more to be able to stay in the game for the full 90 minutes.
“We can be very strong, but if we’re not focused, we can lose against anyone. If we’re well prepared, we can compete against anyone.”
Liverpool came away with a point from the weekend, while Florian Wirtz has hit form, scoring four times in his last six games and likely to start again on Wednesday.
Mohamed Salah returns from AFCON, where Egypt lost the third-place playoff on penalties and he missed his spot-kick. His participation against Marseille may be delayed to the weekend for recovery, but he could feature in the squad.
Meanwhile, Liverpool FC Women have learned their opponents for the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup. The Reds will host Everton in the next round after a 6-0 win over London Bees on the weekend.
The Merseyside derby was confirmed during Monday night’s draw, with matches scheduled for February 22. Full fixture details will be announced in due course. Winners at this stage of the competition will receive £80,000 from the prize fund, while the losing teams will earn £20,000.
