Jamie Carragher explains "the conundrum" Arne Slot has over-corrected in trying to fix

Arne Slot is under a lot of pressure at Liverpool with many outlets linking Xabi Alonso as his replacement.

The Dutchman has managed to stop Liverpool’s losing form but there aren’t many wins to talk about either.

Recent home draws have intensified the rumours around Slot’s future at the club, especially with Alonso now available. Alonso was recently sacked by Real Madrid but hopes to take a job in the summer – not now.

Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley left a lot to be desired. When Florian Wirtz scored the opener, it capped off some great attacking efforts in the first half.

But once again, the Reds couldn’t capitalise and allowed Burnley far too much room to create opportunities to get back into the game.

Jamie Carragher analyses Liverpool’s form amid Arne Slot speculation

Speaking on Sky Sports about Liverpool’s recent form, Jamie Carragher argued that Slot has gone too far in correcting defensive issues from earlier in the season and has therefore over-corrected.

Carragher said: “The concerning thing over this run is Liverpool are playing with the handbrake on. I don’t think that was the case at the weekend against Burnley.

“I think Liverpool played really well and sometimes you have to accept you don’t get the result that you really deserve, which Liverpool did. I don’t think this game in isolation reflects the last couple of months.

“I think the dilemma for every manager in every team in every league is balance between attack and defence. The balance was not right at the start of the season. It was too much in the attacking sense and Liverpool were leaving themselves open at the back. Arne Slot has stopped that. He has stopped the defeats.

“The balance has almost gone far too one way, where the energy and pace isn’t there. He’s done that to stop the end to end games, to make the team stronger defensively.

“That’s the conundrum for everybody, getting the balance right between attack and defence, and he hasn’t got that right this season. Maybe Mohamed Salah will change it when he’s back.”

When does Mohamed Salah return from AFCON?

It’s doubtful that Mohamed Salah will start against Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday.

It’s more likely that he will start or be in the matchday squad to face Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday (25 Jan).

He returned to UK on Sunday (18 Jan) after Egypt’s near-miss with the AFCON trophy.
