Chelsea legend John Terry has hailed the performance of Man Utd defender Harry Maguire following the 2-0 win over Man City at the weekend.
It was the 32-year-old’s first start since returning from a hamstring injury, and Terry was very complimentary with regards to the way the centre-back conducted himself in the derby:
“Man United is such a better team with Harry Maguire in the squad today, back playing. I’m not sure there’s a more difficult game to come into. A Manchester derby playing against the best striker in the world in [Erling] Haaland.”

“He’s just so good in both boxes and so good on the ball as well. Saw him drive out with the ball and was so comfortable with it. In this form, Harry Maguire has to be on the plane for the World Cup.”
Maguire was part of a dominant team display
Although Terry feels that it was the England international’s presence that elevated the team’s level against City, it must be said that everyone played their part.
Interim manager Michael Carrick got his game plan spot on, and the Red Devils arguably deserved to win the game by more than a two-goal margin.
Maguire contributed massively, but the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, captain Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez were also outstanding. Read our player ratings for the match here.
The defender could part ways with Man Utd soon
Maguire’s contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer, and it doesn’t appear as if he will be putting pen to paper on an extension at this stage.
United are reportedly refusing to offload him to interested parties this month, but there is a decent chance that he will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season after seven years.
