Romano Reveals Newcastle's Transfer Stance As "Top Premier League Clubs" Circle £55M Midfielder

Newcastle United may have to fight off other “top Premier League clubs” in addition to Serie A giants Juventus in order to keep midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano made it clear that the Italian, who was signed from AC Milan for £55m in 2023, would not be moving back home this month. However, a departure in the summer transfer window can’t be ruled out:

“Tonali will not leave Newcastle in January. Forget about that, it is impossible. From Italy, there have been stories linking him with a return, especially to Juventus. Juve consider Tonali their dream signing for summer 2026. They already tried behind the scenes in 2025, but it was absolutely impossible with Newcastle. For 2026, Juventus will be there again. At the same time, people close to the player expect top Premier League clubs to arrive and show interest in the summer. It is going to be an interesting window.”

“But everything depends on Newcastle. They will control the situation, and they will control the price. We saw last summer how tough they were in negotiations with Liverpool for Alexander Isak. It will not be easy, but Juventus and top Premier League clubs will be there because Tonali is one of the best midfielders around.”

Which Premier League teams are pursuing the Newcastle star?

Romano has not mentioned any clubs by name, but there have been suggestions that Liverpool are interested. Considering what happened with Isak, you would think that would be a non-starter.

Chelsea are the other team who have been credited with an interest, although those claims have come from questionable sources.

Tonali has not hidden his desire to return home

The links to Juventus have always been the most concrete, not only because of the Bianconeri’s strong desire to sign the 25-year-old, but also due to the player’s own comments.

On more than one occasion, Tonali has hinted that he is open to a return to Serie A. For now, though, he is staying at St James’ Park.
