As things stand, Chelsea’s highest and only priority in the remaining days of the January transfer window is to bring in a defender. Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet is top of Chelsea’s list.
But there are bigger issues at Chelsea than simply adding a defender and hoping it all goes away. The Blues have made a solid start under Liam Rosenior, who has been tasked with putting out fires.
A mad schedule means Rosenior is forced to take every game as it comes, rotate his squad, and do what he can without overwhelming his new squad of players with a completely new system and tactics.
But some players are clearly weak points in this side, which is why Chelsea have moved for a defender and accelerated summer plans. Troy Deeney’s verdict on one Chelsea player highlights another weakness.

Troy Deeney picks Chelsea star in his Team of the Week
Saturday’s display against Brentford was a tired one. It was one that saw Rosenior make another five changes but in hindsight, he might have made more. Chelsea were incredibly lucky to secure a 2-0 win.
The fact that the only Chelsea player, having beat a Brentford side flying high, was goalkeeper Robert Sanchez tells a story in itself. The Blues got incredibly lucky not to concede, with Sanchez in good form.

Deeney said on Sanchez in his BBC Sport column: “Coming off the back of a terrible week with his errors against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, you have to say he answered the questions the right way.
“Delivered against Brentford, made some big saves, kept Chelsea in the game and a clean sheet, which helps along the way,” Deeney summed up, with Chelsea keeping a first clean sheet in eight games.
Deeney summary explains why Chelsea must replace Sanchez
Deeney’s comments highlight the issue Chelsea have with Sanchez. The £25m goalkeeper can be excellent one week, and then drop two clangers as he did against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semis.

If Chelsea are ever going to win anything and re-establish themselves as a title contender, they need a goalkeeper they can rely on. Sanchez is not that and it is another season in which he has failed to do it.
Mike Maignan is a long-term target for Chelsea and more recently, Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar has been linked. Chelsea need a goalkeeper that consistently performs at the top level and Sanchez is not that.
