Romano Confirms Arsenal Move Is Now At“Final Stages”After Player Accepts Proposal

Arsenal attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri’s move to Marseille on loan is at the “final stages, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Writing on his X account, Romano confirmed that the 18-year-old has agreed to join the Ligue One side for the rest of the season:

“Ethan Nwaneri has accepted to join Olympique Marseille! Arsenal also believe it’s the best solution on loan. Arteta also spoke with Roberto de Zerbi and OM seen as ideal solution. Straight loan deal at final stages, no buy option clause – expected to be agreed soon.”

As Romano points out, Marseille will not have the opportunity to purchase the player at the end of the season.

This is a U-turn from Nwaneri and Arsenal

It was reported earlier this month that the teenager was perfectly happy to remain at the Emirates for the rest of the season, despite his lack of game time.

Nwaneri has not started a single league match, with the arrival of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace having seriously limited his minutes.

There had been rumours that the player could leave on loan at the start of the month, but those suggestions had been played down until the interest from Marseille emerged.

The move to Marseille is seen as a good fit

Former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is currently head coach of the French side, and it appears the Italian has been very influential in changing the mind of both the player and Arsenal.

Marseille are currently involved in a title race, and combined with his attacking style of play, Nwaneri’s development could benefit hugely by playing in a strong team, in a strong league with a gifted manager.

Of course, a lot will hinge on how much the midfielder plays. Arsenal will expect Nwaneri to start for Marseille in the majority of matches in the second half of the season, or the loan will be seen as a failure.
