Man City star Marc Guehi admits he idolises player Chelsea signed for £24 million

Marc Guehi may have left Stamford Bridge, but that hasn’t stopped his feelings towards Chelsea after spending most of his younger years there.

Chelsea find themselves on a hunt for a central defender of their own after the owners decided to pull the trigger in the wake of the Carabao Cup loss to Arsenal.

Instead, Chelsea have set their sights on defender Jeremy Jacquet from French side Rennes. The youngster is believed to be valued at around £60 million.

But, as much as Chelsea are trying to push through a deal, the manager at the French club doesn’t want to lose him.

Marc Guehi would have been a handy addition, but when you see his £300k-a-week wage at Manchester City, it never would have been possible.

And despite a slightly negative exit, he still has positive memories of Chelsea.

Marc Guehi says his idol is Dider Drogba

One thing that won’t sit right with Chelsea fans is the fact that Guehi progressed through the Chelsea academy to make just two appearances in the Carabao Cup before being sold to Crystal Palace in 2021.

Of course, the options at Chelsea at that time were world-class, but it’s another example of one that got away at Stamford Bridge.

Nevertheless, Guehi was asked to pick out his footballing idol in an interview after joining Manchester City via their TikTok account.

His response was perhaps a slightly surprising one, as he went with Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

The reasoning behind Marc Guehi picking Drogba

Didier Drogba, who signed for Chelsea for £24 million all the way back in 2004, went on to become one of their best ever strikers.

But that won’t be why a defender, Marc Guehi, picked him as his idol.

Both Marc Guehi and Didier Drogba were born in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, so seeing a player from the same city become a global icon at the club he joined as a child inspired him

Guehi also joined the Chelsea academy at the Under-8 level in 2009. This was exactly when Drogba was at the peak of his powers, leading Chelsea to Premier League titles and eventually the 2012 Champions League.
