Paul Joyce has provided his latest update on Alexis Mac Allister and a potential contract extension.
Early in the campaign, the Argentine struggled with fitness issues that disrupted his rhythm, though recent performances in Arne Slot’s midfield diamond have shown glimpses of his world-class ability returning.
Mac Allister’s current deal expires in summer 2028, meaning he will enter the final two years of his contract at season’s end—traditionally the period when clubs either negotiate extensions or consider cashing in.
And it looks like the club want to avoid another Trent Alexander-Arnold situation, especially as Real Madrid have been linked on-and-off to the 26-year-old in recent times.
Reporting for the Times, Paul Joyce has confirmed that Liverpool have had contact with the representatives of Mac Allister over a new deal – while the club also want Ryan Gravenberch to extend:
The development comes with Liverpool looking to tie down the future of Szoboszlai’s fellow midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, while there has been contact with the representatives of Alexis Mac Allister about the structure of a future agreement, although talks have not been in depth thus far,” he wrote.
“Contract discussions with a number of Liverpool players have proved complicated in recent times. Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah renewed after prolonged negotiations, while Trent Alexander-Arnold opted to leave and join Real Madrid.”
While Mac Allister has stated he “loves playing for Liverpool,” he has also admitted in the past that he dreams of playing in Spain
Liverpool cannot afford to let another contract situation spiral out of control. While his form has fluctuated, Mac Allister remains a World Cup-winning midfielder in his prime years with the technical quality and positional versatility that Slot’s system demands.
