The football world never ceases to deliver its most delicious ironies, and the latest managerial merry-go-round presents a narrative so perfectly scripted it could have been written in Hollywood. Just days after Xabi Alonso’s unceremonious exit from Real Madrid, the Spanish maestro finds himself inexorably linked with a return to Anfield while former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp emerges as a potential saviour for Los Blancos.
It’s a storyline that writes itself, and one that has Liverpool supporters simultaneously dreaming and fretting about what comes next.
According to Spanish publication Marca, traditionally well-connected to Real Madrid circles, Alonso’s immediate future has already been mapped out.
The report reveals that the Basque-born tactician plans to spend the coming months with his family in San Sebastián, away from the spotlight.
Alonso has been spotted at La Concha beach alongside his father, former Real Sociedad player Perico Alonso. His wife, Nagore Aranburu, who has stood by his side throughout his playing and coaching career, and their three children will be his priority during this period of reflection.
But crucially, Marca reports that Alonso intends to take an “active break of a few months” before considering offers starting in July. The Premier League will have “much to say” about his next destination. And while several English clubs could come calling, it’s naturally Liverpool that seem to hold the advantage.
It is claimed that if Liverpool come calling before July, all bets are off and that Alonso would jump at the chance. “To Liverpool, we all know, he will go soon. Sooner or later” writes journalist Juan Castro.
The report suggests that while Alonso plans to wait until summer, his emotional connection to Anfield – his “club del alma” (club of his soul) -could accelerate that timeline should the opportunity arise.
Alonso’s stated preference is to rest until July before entertaining offers. Such a timeline would necessitate Liverpool either persevering with Slot for the remainder of this season or making a mid-season change to an interim appointment—neither of which appears palatable to FSG.
