Dominik Szoboszlai makes a promise to Liverpool fans he's 'pretty sure' he can keep

He has been one of the most popular players at Liverpool this season, but some of Dominik Szoboszlai’s recent play has been questionable.

There was, of course, the incident against Barnsley at Anfield, where he gave away a goal due to a failed backheel attempt.

Szoboszlai was thrashed by pundits and fans alike, and then in the following game, he blazed a penalty off the bar — what would have been the decisive moment in the game.

Despite the heat and the pressure coming onto the Hungarian at the moment, he isn’t backing down from the challenge.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s penalty promise to Liverpool fans

No player is immune to missed penalties. It’s unfortunate timing for Szoboszlai given the growing feeling of discontent at Liverpool but ultimately, it’s part of the game.

Szoboszlai could be Liverpool captain one day, and that means shouldering responsibility for the team. His response to Match of the Day is along those lines.

He said: “I missed a penalty. But yeah, I’m going to keep on going. I’m gonna take the next one as well, and I’m gonna score, I’m pretty sure.”

With how good he has been this season, I would not expect another miss when he next steps up to the spot. Only issue is, a certain someone has just returned from AFCON and is likely to resume his usual duties — if Arne Slot plays him.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s curious response to Barnsley error

He’s received enough slack for his mistake. It didn’t affect the result, and can be swept under the rug.

Szoboszlai scored an absolute belter for Liverpool just minutes earlier after all.

He did address it though. Not sure what to make of the response…

Szoboszlai remarked: “I made a mistake against Barnsley, but I have to make it clear, it wasn’t disrespectful in my opinion, and I would do the same against Arsenal and against City and against Chelsea as well.”

I get what he’s saying. The message is one of respect for Barnsley, though it might be better to just not do it against anyone.
