Arsenal will continue their Champions League journey on Tuesday night with a trip to the San Siro to face Inter Milan. Mikel Arteta’s side are the only team in the competition that still boast a 100% win record in the league phase with six wins from six.

Inter, meanwhile, are six points behind Arsenal in sixth place, meaning they are also inside the automatic last-16 qualification spots as it stands, though that could all change very quickly. The fixture marks the penultimate league phase game of the competition for both sides, with the Gunners needing a single point in Italy to avoid February’s two-legged knockout stage play-offs.

Securing first place could provide a huge boost to the north Londoners, with teams that finish in the top two being given advantageous home second-leg ties for the last-16, quarter final and semi-final rounds. Arsenal reached the last-four last season but were knocked out by eventual winners PSG with a 3-1 defeat on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Inter reached the final after a legendary tie against Barcelona only to be humiliated 5-0 by PSG at the Allianz Arena. Christian Chivu’s side will hope to avoid a third straight defeat in Europe after being beaten by Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal team news

Defender Piero Hincapie continues to be ruled out with a thigh injury after being withdrawn against Liverpool. The fixture will likely come too early for Riccardo Calafiori too, who is dealing with a muscular problem and has missed the Gunners’ last seven games.

Teenage sensation Max Dowman is still a few weeks away from returning to action following an ankle injury. Cristhian Mosquera and Kai Havertz were both on the bench against Nottingham Forest last weekend following their lengthy absences.

Inter will be without key players in Denzel Dumfries (ankle) and Hakan Calhanoglu (muscle), who played a key role in their run to the final last season. Back-up goalkeepers Josep Martinez and Raffaele Di Gennaro are ruled out too, while Tomas Palacios is a doubt due to a muscle problem.

Head to head

Both teams are currently leading their respective domestic tables. Remarkably, they have only played each other three times in the competition’s history, with the most recent being Inter’s 1-0 league phase victory last season, where the Italian side were awarded a controversial penalty and Arsenal were not given their own spot-kick after Yann Sommer clattered into Mikel Merino’s head.

The last meetings before that came in 2003/04, where Arsenal lost 3-0 in the group stage at Highbury before sealing a historic and memorable 5-1 win at the San Siro, becoming the first English side to win there.
