“Marc is a top goalkeeper and a great guy,” Flick said. “It’s a good decision for him.”

A native of Monchengladbach, ter Stegen joined Barca in 2014 in a €12 million move from boyhood club Borussia Monchengladbach. In his 12 seasons at Camp Nou, ter Stegen has made 423 appearances across all competitions and has won six La Liga titles, six Copas del Rey and the 2015 Champions League crown.

Ter Stegen tore his patellar tendon in a Sept. 2024 match with Villarreal and would go on to miss the rest of the season. He opened the current campaign as the third-choice ‘keeper behind Joan Garcia and Wojtek Szczesny.

After nearly a yearlong absence, ter Stegen made his return to the national team in June, appearing in the UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal and the ensuing third-place match with France. He allowed four goals against in the pair of losses.

Also competing for the No. 1 shirt are Stuttgart’s Alexander Nubel and Oliver Baumann of Hoffenheim. Germany will compete in Group C alongside Curacao, Cote d’Ivoire and Ecuador. Germany’s June 20 match against Cote d’Ivoire is set for Toronto.
