Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler wasted little time projecting defiance after suffering a season-ending ACL injury, delivering a message that was equal parts humor, resolve, and unmistakably Butler.
“Be back before you know it,” Butler wrote on Instagram late Monday night, posting a collage of photos and videos from Golden State’s 135-112 win over the Miami Heat, his former team. The post also featured a doctored image of Butler dressed in a classic military general’s uniform with the caption: “General Soreness.”
It was vintage Butler, blending bravado and levity in the face of adversity, and a reminder of the personality that has long made him one of the NBA’s most compelling figures.

Even as the gravity of the injury set in, Butler remained unmistakably himself. Warriors franchise star Stephen Curry revealed that Butler was in high spirits even after going down on the court.
“He was still cracking jokes over there while he was on the ground,” Curry said. “In true Jimmy fashion, he’s always gonna have a good time no matter what the situation is.”
That attitude has followed Butler throughout his career and was on full display during a moment that could have easily turned somber inside Chase Center.

Butler sustained the injury at the 7:41 mark of the third quarter. While leaping to secure an entry pass in the middle of the paint, Butler collided with Miami Heat guard Davion Mitchell. As he landed, his right knee twisted awkwardly, sending him crashing to the floor in visible pain.
The arena fell silent as Butler remained down for several minutes, surrounded by stunned teammates and medical staff. Eventually, he was helped to his feet and escorted slowly to the locker room, unable to put weight on his right leg.
Even then, Butler found room for humor, joking with nearby officials that he was owed two free throws before disappearing down the tunnel, according to ESPN.

Following confirmation that the injury was a torn ACL, Butler’s agent, Bernie Lee, released a resolute statement framing the setback as another chapter in the 36-year-old star’s journey rather than an ending.
“Obviously a gut punch on every level for Jimmy and the entire group,” Lee said in a statement released to ESPN. “But I firmly believe that this is a part of the journey and we can’t only expect to take the good things out of it. We’ve watched life happen to countless others and now it’s his turn to face this. It’s how life works.”
Lee’s words echoed a belief that has followed Butler for more than a decade.
“I’ve known for over 10 years now that Jimmy is going to win a championship before he is done. My belief in that is unwavering,” Lee added. “If you know anything about Jimmy you know exactly how he will attack this challenge. Put simply, he has this.”

With Butler lost for the remainder of the season, Golden State now faces difficult decisions as it attempts to maintain momentum. One immediate ripple effect could be the return of Jonathan Kuminga, who has not played since Dec. 18 and has been the subject of persistent trade rumors ahead of the deadline.
When head coach Steve Kerr was asked postgame whether Kuminga could reenter the rotation, his response was straightforward.
“Sure. Absolutely,” Kerr said.

“In some shape or form, the Warriors are back on the rollercoaster that is their saga with Jonathan Kuminga,” Charania said. “Whether they go all-in again with Kuminga to see, can he play in the absence of Jimmy Butler, the focus is going to squarely be on him. My sources tell me the relationship between him and Steve Kerr is fractured beyond repair.”
