While a 12-match unbeaten run in all competitions suggests Liverpool are stabilising, the mood remains subdued at Anfield ahead of their return to Champions League action.

The Reds travel to Marseille on Wednesday for their penultimate league-phase fixture, aiming to push into the top eight. However, they do so after a disappointing 1-1 home draw with Burnley, a result that has again placed head coach Arne Slot under scrutiny.

Liverpool have now failed to beat any newly promoted side at home this season, drawing all three such matches for the first time since 1980-81.

Slot’s side have also drawn six of their last nine Premier League games, including four in a row, matching a run last seen in January 2008.

Europe has offered more encouragement, though, with a late Dominik Szoboszlai penalty securing a 1-0 win over Inter in their last Champions League outing.

Liverpool sit on 12 points ahead of matchday seven, level with Inter, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, but occupy ninth place due to an inferior goal tally to Atletico, who currently hold the final top-eight spot.

Liverpool U19s have meanwhile progressed to the knockout stage of the UEFA Youth League despite a 5-0 defeat to Inter Milan. Goals inside the opening 15 minutes from Dilan Zarate, via a penalty, and Pietro La Torre put the Italian side in control.

An unfortunate own goal from Kornel Misciur was followed by late strikes from Mattia Mosconi and Kevin Moressa. However, the Reds had already secured qualification.

According to Lewis Bower, Liverpool U19s have travelled to face Marseille in a friendly tomorrow. With the UEFA Youth League league phase now concluded, the match will serve as preparation ahead of their knockout tie against Zilina in February.
