Inter 1-3 Arsenal Stats: Gunners Keep Up 100% Record to Progress to Last 16

Arsenal confirmed their spot in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 3-1 victory against Inter Milan, continuing their 100% record in the competition this season.

Arsenal made it seven wins from seven in this season’s UEFA Champions League with an excellent 3-1 win in the San Siro against Internazionale.

A first-half brace from Gabriel Jesus, either side of Petar Sucic’s excellent strike for the home side, put the Gunners in charge before substitute Viktor Gyökeres completed the scoring six minutes from time.

Jesus opened the scoring in the 10th minute, sliding to convert from close range after Jurriën Timber’s pass into the box. That strike ended a run of 10 UCL games without a goal Jesus, but it was his 25th goal in 53 Champions League appearances – the only Brazilians to reach 25 goals in fewer games are Neymar (44) and Jardel (45).

Arsenal’s lead lasted just eight minutes, with Sucic equalising from the edge of the box with a side-footed effort that beat the outstretched hand of David Raya.

The Gunners regained the lead just past the half-hour mark, again through Jesus. A Bukayo Saka corner went all the way to the back post, where Leandro Trossard headed back across goal onto the crossbar before Arsenal’s number 9 nodded in from close range.

That was Arsenal’s 19th goal in all competitions this season from a corner, the most by any side in Europe’s big five leagues since the Club World Cup (Tottenham Hotspur next with 15).

It was a first half that saw good chances at both ends, and the second half followed suit but without the goals.

After a superb Alessandro Bastoni challenge had denied Saka at one end, Francesco Pio Esposito came close to levelling the scores at the other in the 67th minute, rolling Cristhian Mosquera but sending his shot just wide of the far post.

Much has been made of Gyökeres’ lack of goals in an Arsenal shirt since signing from Sporting CP in the summer, but he added another to his tally at the club with a great finish in the closing stages of this match.

The Swede raced into the Inter half before a stroke of luck saw the ball deflect back to him after an attempted pass, before he curled the ball into the top corner to secure all three points.

This win means that Arsenal have secured their spot in the top eight of the UCL league phase and guaranteed their place in the round of 16 – the first, and so far only, club to do so.

Following this victory, Kairat – bottom of the league table – stand in the way of the Gunners completing the league phase with maximum points and becoming the first team to do so in the new format of the competition.
