Exclusive: Former Liverpool star tells Arne Slot to ‘work with what he has got’

Pressure is starting to rise on Arne Slot and, as it stands, there are no plans to back him in this transfer window.

Liverpool currently sit 4th in the Premier League table and have won just five of their last 17 league games, leaving many supporters frustrated.

Watching two long-term targets in Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi join Manchester City has only fuelled the fire further, whilst Liverpool continue to battle a number of major injury issues.

However, former Liverpool star Stan Collymore, speaking exclusively to Anfield Index, has told Slot to get more out of his current options instead of dipping into the transfer market again.

Collymore’s thoughts

Just five months on from a record-breaking £450m spend in the summer, Liverpool’s squad is already looking thin. But Collymore believes there’s more than enough quality in the current squad:

“I think Liverpool have got to work with what they’ve got. I know there was links with Semenyo, but that would’ve felt greedy,” said Collymore.

“You’ve got to look at Ekitike, Gakpo, Salah across these big games this season,” continued Collymore, “If Salah comes back and hits the ground running, they won’t need anyone and it would be business as usual in terms of relying on Salah.”

“Liverpool have more than enough to compete for that top four. They’re not going to win the Premier League or come second, but they should qualify for the Champions League.”

Slot’s Options

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Marseille in the Champions League, Slot has just two centre-backs at his disposal. Ibrahima Konate is expected to miss the game due to personal reasons, whilst Giovanni Leoni is sidelined for the season with an ACL injury.

At right-back, Conor Bradley is also out for the season with a major injury, which has further weakened his defensive options.

In the front-line, record signing Alexander Isak is set to miss a few months after suffering a leg break in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Many fans feel the need for reinforcements urgently, Collymore believes that Slot should stick with his current group.
