Jesus at the double as Arsenal see off Inter to reach the last 16 of the Champions League

Arsenal defeated Inter Milan 3-1 in the Champions League league phase at San Siro on Tuesday night.

Gabriel Jesus gave the visitors the early lead inside the opening 10 minutes when Jurriën Timber’s shot was blocked by Federico Dimarco, and the Brazilian was the fastest to react, stroking the ball into the bottom corner.

Eight minutes later, Petar Sucic restored parity after both Marcus Thuram and Nicolo Barella had their shots blocked with the ball dropping at the edge of the area, and Croatian slammed home the equaliser.

At the other end, Eberechi Eze had the chance to respond immediately for the Gunners, but he dragged his effort wide from the left side of the box.

Just before the half-hour mark, Thuram squandered an opportunity to give his side the lead after Sucic found him in the area, but the Frenchman skied his effort.

In the 31st minute, Jesus doubled his tally and restored Arsenal’s lead after Bukayo Saka’s corner to the back post was headed back by Leandro Trossard, which flicked off the crossbar to the path of the Brazilian who nodded home his second of the night.

Moments later, Saka had his sights on goal, but his shot from distance curled wide of the far post.

Just before the break, Sucic tried his luck from distance, but his effort was saved by David Raya in goal.

Shortly after the break, Eze could’ve given the visitors a two-goal cushion, but his effort from the edge of the box was collected by Yann Sommer.

At the other end, Thuram had his sights on goal from range, but his effort flew straight into the gloves of Raya.

Just past the half-hour, Bastoni made a last-ditch block to deny Saka a shot at the edge of the area.

Minutes later, Henrique clipped in a ball into the path of Esposito, who then hit it on the half volley, but his effort flew just wide of the far post.

The host continued to search for an equaliser and almost got it after Esposito got at the end of a corner, but his effort went just off target.

In the 81st minute, Saka tried to get Arsenal’s third, but his shot from the right of the box went straight into the gloves of Sommer.

However, Viktor Gyökeres would eventually get the Gunners’ third three minutes later when Gabriel Martinelli found him with a pass on the break, and the Swede tried to feed Saka on the right, which was blocked, who then shot first time and picked out the top corner with a wonderful finish.

On the stroke of full-time, Frattesi had a decent opportunity to reduce the deficit, but his effort from six yards out blazed over the bar.

Arsenal have now secured a place in the last 16 of the Champions League and a guaranteed top-two finish in the league phase standings.
