A red-faced football fan has been teased online for attempting to sell a £52 Liverpool jersey — emblazoned with Marc Guéhi's name.

The central defender was on the verge of joining Liverpool in August but the deal, thought to be worth around £35million, fell through at the eleventh hour. One overconfident supporter jumped the gun, though, and bought the Liverpool shirt, personalising it with Guéhi's name and the number 23.

Guéhi, who has played for England 26 times, signed for Manchester City this week on a five-and-a-half-year contract. The transfer has left the fan desperately trying to flog the merchandise but they've had no takers — and instead been mocked for their cocky attitude.

One said: "Is he hoping someone accidentally buys it from him?" Another added: "How can you accidentally buy it." One said: "Was 23 even going to be his number had he joined Liverpool?"

Another said: "We have to watch (Ibrahima) Konaté then." One added: "To be fair I did something similar with Modric back in the day, I had a green Chelsea (Luka) Modrić shirt and he never even signed."

The seller, from Horsham, West Sussex, wants £52.70 for the shirt, which they bought amid the growing speculation the 25-year-old defender was to join The Reds in the summer.

They chose number 23, although there had been no announcement Guéhi had been assigned a would-be number. It is understood the defender would have had this digit because it was famously worn by club legend Jamie Carragher, who spent 17 years at the huge club.

Guéhi made a name for himself at Crystal Palace, captaining the side to FA Cup glory last year. Eberechi Eze was the hero for the Eagles at Wembley in the 1-0 win, ironically against Manchester City, in May.

The Liverpool supporter, who bought the jersey in the weeks that followed, said on their online eBay advert: "Accidental purchase.. Forgot to cancel." A string of playful comments from sports fans has flooded in under the advert.

Guéhi, who progressed through Chelsea's academy before his switch to Crystal Palace in 2021, is likely to make his Man City debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium. City go into the tie off the back of surprise defeat in the Champions League at Bodø/Glimt in Norway, and a loss at Old Trafford to huge rivals Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola has also signed midfielder Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £64million during this transfer window. The 26-year-old star, capped 32 times by Ghana, has already scored twice since arriving.
