Man Utd are eyeing a move for a Barcelona midfielder but face competition from Atletico Madrid and Wolves, according to reports in Spain

Manchester United have held initial talks for Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado as reports in Spain claim the Red Devils are interested in a deal this month.

United have made contact for the player but Premier League rivals Wolves are interested along with La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils are on a high after Michael Carrick oversaw a dominant 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday afternoon in his first game as interim manager.

The club are only planning to pursue any sensible deals this transfer window but Mundo Deportivo report United are interested in Casado as his importance at Barca has waned in recent months.

The 22-year-old is managed by agent Jorge Mendes, who did deals with United for Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte.

Carlos Baleba, Elliott Anderson and Adam Wharton all remain top targets for the Old Trafford club, with the former two expected to command a fee of around £100m while Wharton’s value will likely start from £60m but potentially be a lot higher.

Casado will not come cheap but will be on lower wages and likely eager to play regular football. He could get that chance at Old Trafford as Ugarte continues to be linked with an exit - Ajax being the latest club to show interest - while Casemiro is out of contract this summer.

The Barcelona midfielder is reported to prefer to remain with the club this season and if he was to leave then he would prefer a move abroad. He has started just 10 games this season.

United could move for a player this month after initial plans to only sign a top target if they became available.

Providing an update earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano said: “I wanted to mention something on Manchester United. Because in the next hours, I would say, at the very beginning of this week, there will be an internal meeting at Manchester United, involving also the ideas of Michael Carrick.

“That is not Michael Carrick who decides, but Michael Carrick, who started his Manchester United chapter in a fantastic way, by winning the Manchester Derby, showing very good energy, very good football.

“But at the same time, Carrick will be involved in the conversation with Man United to decide on several situations, what they want to do on the market from now to the end of the January transfer window.

“If they want to go and try and get a player for an opportunity, maybe in midfield, maybe in other positions, maybe a striker. So they need to assess and decide with Michael Carrick, or continue with the current squad and invest in the summer.”
