Lakers head coach JJ Redick said Deandre Ayton's eye is not in good shape at the moment but expects him to be fine going forward, joking that "he looks like a pirate" with the patch he has to wear.
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick commented on Deandre Ayton's eye injury after a 115–107 win against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday.
Redick said Ayton should be fine tomorrow and that it was just a bare-minimum poke in the eye, while also having a funny way to describe how he looked after the incident.
"He got poked in the eye," Redick said postgame. "He looks like a pirate. His eye is not in good shape, but we're hopeful that it's just bare minimum — just a poke in the eye — and he'll be back tomorrow."
Ayton remained in the Lakers' locker room after sustaining a left eye injury late in the second quarter.
Ayton tallied four points and eight boards in 15 minutes before the injury announcement.
Averaging 14 points and 8.8 boards per game this season, Ayton was coming off a perfect 25-point, 13-rebound performance against the Toronto Raptors in the Lakers' 110–93 win on Sunday.
