Report: Celtic eyeing ambitious move to sign Champions League winner on free transfer

Celtic could look to get a deal over the line for left-back Andy Robertson, according to reports - with the Scottish star set to depart Liverpool at the end of the season, as it stands.

The Hoops have suffered a sub-par start to the Scottish Premiership season, seeing Brendan Rodgers depart before the tumultuous reign of Wilfried Nancy, which lasted just 33 days before his departure.

New signings are set to come into their ranks in the coming days and weeks of the January transfer window, but with one eye on the summer and prolonging Celtic's dominance in Scotland for the years to come, that could see them look to tempt Glaswegian native Robertson back to Parkhead after a 17-year hiatus.

Report: Celtic Hope to Tempt Andy Robertson Back to Glasgow This Summer

Liverpool's Andy Robertson

The report by Football Insider states that Celtic are keeping tabs on Robertson, with the full-back's contract expiring at Anfield at the end of June.

Robertson, who is shortly set to turn 32 years of age, grew up in Celtic's academy before his release from Parkhead in 2009, being deemed too small by Head of Youth, Chris McCart.

A long career which saw him join Queen's Park, Dundee United, Hull City and then Liverpool has been massively fruitful for Robertson, racking up 321 Premier League appearances with 60 assists to boot, winning two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy among others.

However, Milos Kerkez has been preferred to him at points throughout the season and with Robertson's contract up at the end of the season, a romantic return back to Scotland could be on the cards.

A number of European clubs are thought to be keeping a close eye on Robertson's situation, as he looks for a challenge away from the Premier League - but that return to his boyhood club could be too strong to turn down.

Atletico Madrid looked to get a deal done for Robertson during the summer, but a deal wasn't completed and he stayed as competition for Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas.

Celtic Having Tierney and Robertson Massively Boosts Their Titles Aspirations

Celtic's Kieran Tierney looks on

Celtic have already added a former left-back and fan favourite to their ranks in Kieran Tierney, but Robertson's prowess at club and national level would make him the ideal pickup for the Hoops despite an estimated £200,000-a-week contract, via Capology.

His experience is second to none, having started in three Champions League finals, and Celtic would rely on him to fire them over the line in European competition as well as domestically.

Robertson and Tierney's experiences alone would be expected to see the Hoops dominate on home soil to avoid any ignominy under their new boss.
