'Manager driven': Liam Rosenior has personally requested £60m Chelsea signing

The January transfer window is beginning to heat up as Chelsea hunts a much-needed defensive signing before the deadline.

Liam Rosenior has enjoyed a reasonable start as Chelsea boss, but the performances have thrown up some clear signs that improvements are required.

A central defender was the most obvious of signings to make, and it’s a shock to see the Chelsea board go out and actually put plans into place.

Jeremy Jacquet looks like the most likely signing for Chelsea, but it’s a confusing situation, as there could even be a situation where he goes back to Rennes on loan for the rest of the season.

Now, it remains to be seen as to whether Chelsea would then go out and sign a different centre-back, especially as Tosin Adarabioyo is now out for a few weeks.

At Strasbourg, it was very much a case of just getting what you’re given, which was predominantly based around the development of younger players.

Now, it’s a different story, with the demand for new signings and staying competitive coming from Chelsea supporters.

And it looks as if Rosenior is buying into the plan, too, as he requested to sign Jeremy Jacquet, knowing Chelsea has the power to pull off the signing of a player like him.

Ben Jacobs shared the news on a space on X with @cfc_gem.

“I’m told Liam Rosenior has come into Chelsea and said at Strasbourg, we never had a prayer of signing Jacquet but at Chelsea we can, can we go and get him? Chelsea are trying to back him, this would be quite a manager driven signing.”

Chelsea’s centre-back situation after Tosin Adarabioyo’s injury

Chelsea have just Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badisahile as out-and-out centre-backs.

Levi Colwill and Adarabioyo are the current absentees, whilst Jorrel Hato and Axel Disasi can play at the heart of the defence, but the former is predominantly a left-back.

Disasi’s future is still up in the air, but he has been spotted back in training after an Under-21s stint.

It will be fascinating to see what unfolds over the next few weeks, though don’t be surprised if it gets to the transfer deadline and Chelsea are planning to just make-do with their current resources.
