The rumours are building once again surrounding Arne Slot and his role as Liverpool manager

Talks are once again surrounding Arne Slot’s position at Liverpool and whether he will be in charge beyond this season.

Reds fans and the media have accepted they will relinquish their Premier League title this season, as they sit a hefty 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. A nightmare run of form between September and November — which saw Liverpool lose six games from seven — was the main cause of the season derailment.

Despite picking up form towards the end of 2025, the reigning champions are now looking to break their four-game run of draws, including two 0-0 score-lines.

Will Liverpool sack Arne Slot?

It’s a question being asked by fans and professionals around the world — will Liverpool sack Slot this season?

Journalist David Lynch does not believe the board will wield the axe on the Dutchman midway through the season. However, he does believe that a change in the summer could be on the cards.

“They clearly, clearly want to get to the end of the season with Slot if they can. They don’t want to make a mid-season managerial change because who do you get as the interim? It would clearly be better to make the managerial change in the summer,” Lynch told Anfield Index.

“I think his future’s already set, to be honest. It’s been so pronounced, the decline, for such a long time. It is only a case of getting to the summer, albeit if he starts to lose six, seven on the bounce again, he will get bulleted because they’ll feel forced to go for an interim. They don’t want to change, they really would prefer not to.”

Will Liverpool bring in Xabi Alonso as their new manager?

Before Slot’s arrival, Xabi Alonso was Liverpool’s first choice target. However, the former midfielder opted to stay with Bayer Leverkusen at that time, having just guided them to their first Bundesliga title.

Alonso is now free to approach, having left Real Madrid earlier this month. Reports have claimed the Reds are still admirers of their ex-player and the rumours are building once again as he continues to be linked with a return to Anfield.

Lynch was asked about Alonso’s link to Liverpool and whether he will replace Slot in the dugout.

“It’s kind of go for a manager then in the summer. People are talking about ‘go and get Xabi Alonso’, but he’s not gonna want to walk into a job now, so it’d have to be an interim, and I don’t think there’s a great deal out there.”

It has been reported that Alonso is not looking to jump straight into another job right now and will revisit talks in the summer over his next role. However, according to Marca, that could change if Liverpool come calling.
