January 21 – Norway’s Bodo/Glimt stunned Manchester City 3-1 in the Champions League, prompting Pep Guardiola to say that “everything is going wrong.”
Erling Haaland and City will have imagined a different return to Bodo where they were outplayed by the hosts to slump to a 3-1 defeat that included a red card for midfield anchor Rodri. The English club however were without a slate of first-team players.
City have won just two of their last seven matches in all competitions and Guardiola was left to lament another torrid night after they lost the Manchester derby last weekend.
“Today was an incredible opportunity for us,” said Guardiola, “but everything is going wrong, going against us in many details. That’s a fact and we have to try to change it. The players are there and we tried.”
“I don’t have any doubt that in this competition, nothing is for granted, that’s for sure. United were better than us (Saturday). Today it was momentum that punished us.”
The semi-finalists from last season’s Europa League played front-foot football and never looked back, cutting through City’s makeshift defense time and again. Kasper Hogh scored a brace in the first half, exploiting mistakes from rookie defender Max Alleyn.
In the second half, Jens Petter Hauge slalomed his way past City players to score a stunning third before Rayan Cherki pulled a goal back. Spanish midfielder Rodri was sent off following a second booking.
“I don’t have the answers. I take full responsibility of not being able to score the goals I should do,” said Haaland. “I just apologise to everyone – every single Man City supporter and every single supporter that travelled today. Because in the end, it’s embarrassing.”
In seventh spot with 13 points in the Champions League table, City remain poised to clinch direct qualification to the knockout phase, hosting Galatasaray from Turkey in their final league game. Bodo are 27th in the table, but need to win away at Atletico Madrid to have any chance of progressing.
