Arsenal have started to monitor one of the most highly rated teenage defenders in Brazilian football. According to a detailed report from Globo Esporte, the Premier League side are following the development of Corinthians centre-back Iago Machado.
Corinthians representatives and the player’s entourage have both been contacted by Arsenal.
The 16-year-old recently took an important step in his progression. Corinthians head coach Dorival Júnior called him up to train with the first team at the training centre. The move underlines how highly the defender is rated internally.
European interest starting to build
Arsenal are not alone in tracking the youngster. Ajax have also made contact in recent weeks. Representatives of Corinthians and the agency managing Iago’s career received approaches from both European clubs.
The interest focuses on a future move. FIFA regulations prevent international transfers involving minors, meaning any deal could only happen once the defender turns 18 in February next year. For now, the conversations remain exploratory, with no formal talks underway.
Corinthians have already reacted to the growing attention. The club recently agreed a contractual addendum with Iago Machado. That deal increased his salary and raised his release clause to €100m (£85m) to protect him for now.
