Liverpool take on Marseille on Wednesday as they look to secure their spot in the Champions League's automatic last-16 qualification places. Arne Slot’s side began Gameweek 7 sitting just outside the top eight qualification spots through goal difference.
They have already amassed 12 points from a campaign that has seen them claim victories over the likes of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. Yet, despite their impressive European pedigree, Liverpool arrive in southern France following a frustrating 1-1 Premier League draw against Burnley. Slot’s Reds have also dropped points in Europe to Galatasaray and PSV in shock defeats this season.
Marseille, meanwhile, are enjoying a resurgence under Roberto De Zerbi and have nine points already secured. The French giants are in a rich vein of form, having won their last two European fixtures against Union Saint-Gilloise and Newcastle United while remaining the highest scorers in Ligue 1.
With both teams harbouring ambitions of a top-eight finish, this fixture at the Orange Velodrome promises to be an end-to-end encounter between two of the competition's most attack-minded sides.

Liverpool team news
The Reds may finally welcome back Mohamed Salah following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, though his involvement remains a late decision for Slot. Liverpool will be without Conor Bradley (knee), Giovanni Leoni (knee), and Alexander Isak (leg).
However, Slot has a healthy squad otherwise, with Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister pushing for starts after being rested during the weekend’s draw with Burnley.
Marseille's English forward #10 Mason Will John Greenwood (C) celebrates with Marseille's French defender #04 Benjamin Jacques Mar Pavard (L) and Marseille's Panamanian defender #02 Michael Amir Murillo Bermudez (R) after Marseille scored their fourth goal during the French Cup round of 32 football match between FC Bayeux and Olympique de Marseille (OM) at the Michel-d'Ornano Stadium in Caen on January 13, 2026.

Marseille team news
Marseille are still expected to be without Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd following his AFCON heartbreak, while Derek Cornelius (muscle) and Ruben Blanco (knee) remain in the treatment room.
Bilal Nadir is a doubt after being forced off against Angers, which could open the door for former Premier League midfielders Angel Gomes or Matt O’Riley to start. In attack, former Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the in-form Mason Greenwood are expected to lead the line.

Head-to-head
This fixture marks the first competitive meeting between the two European heavyweights since the 2008/09 Champions League group stage. During that campaign, Rafael Benitez's Liverpool did the double over the French side, winning 2-1 at the Velodrome and 1-0 at Anfield.
The sides also met in the 2007/08 season, when Marseille famously won 1-0 at Anfield before Liverpool responded with a 4-0 victory in the return leg.
