Both Marseille and Liverpool, keen to secure automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16, meet at the Orange Velodrome on Wednesday evening in the group stage. Les Olympiens are pursuing a third straight victory in Europe's premier competition, whilst the Reds are seeking to recover from recent domestic setbacks.

For Liverpool, the Champions League has frequently offered a welcome respite from their difficulties in the 2025-26 Premier League season. The Reds have relished a succession of memorable European evenings of late, including two convincing victories over Real Madrid and a commanding win at San Siro.

Arne Slot's team went into their matchday six clash with Inter Milan as outsiders, but the reigning Premier League champions exceeded expectations to secure a 1-0 triumph, thanks to a Dominik Szoboszlai spot-kick, leaving them on the brink of a top-eight finish. Liverpool currently sit level on points and goal difference with Atletico Madrid, but trail Diego Simeone's side in the race for automatic qualification due to an inferior goals-scored tally.

Real Madrid and Inter also have 12 points apiece, making the group finely poised. However, Liverpool's weekend draw with relegation-threatened Burnley-a 1-1 result at Anfield-was less cause for celebration, as it saw the Reds become the first reigning Premier League champions to fail to win any of their three home games against newly-promoted sides in a single season, fuelling speculation about Arne Slot's future on Merseyside.

Slot will be hoping his side can extend their 12-match unbeaten run on Wednesday, but overcoming Roberto De Zerbi's free-scoring Marseille will be no straightforward task. The French outfit have embraced an attacking philosophy throughout the 2025-26 season, a strategy that paid dividends again on matchday six when a Mason Greenwood brace led them to a 3-2 victory over Belgian hopefuls Union Saint-Gilloise.

De Zerbi's men have also secured wins over Newcastle United and PSV Eindhoven in this year's competition, though they have succumbed to Sporting Lisbon, Atalanta, and Real Madrid. Currently 12th in their group and three points adrift of the automatic qualification spots, Marseille remain in contention.

On the domestic front, Marseille showcased their attacking capabilities yet again with a 5-2 demolition of Angers on Saturday, netting four goals before the 40th minute to remain eight points adrift of table-toppers Lens.
