Liverpool heads into today's round of Champions League fixtures just one point off the top eight spots in the league phase. A win against Marseille would bring it level with Real Madrid on 15 points and above the likes of Spurs and PSG.
For that reason, Arne Slot will be hoping for a big performance. If his side can finish inside the top quarter of the Swiss-system's table, that would mean avoiding the play-off round and the extra matches that brings.
Slot is also under pressure as a result of recent games. Liverpool fans at Anfield booed after the 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield last weekend and the Reds have not been consistent in the last few months.
In the Champions League, they have beaten both Madrid clubs and Inter Milan, though, which should provide some hope that the second half of the season can bring something to look forward to.
Beating Marseille in France would be a big step in the right direction when it comes to doing that. Against Roberto De Zerbi's side, however, it won't be an easy task.
