United Women's Under 21s booked their place in the semi-finals of the Professional Development League Cup after an impressive win over Manchester City on Wednesday afternoon.

It could also have been more on a day where the young Blades showed plenty of attacking intent, starting from the off when it looked like United had been awarded a penalty inside five minutes.

But despite the referee initially pointing the spot after a push on Mollie Austin, the lineswoman intervened to award only a free-kick.

United though remained well on top as Austin then saw a low effort saved, but the breakthrough came inside 15 minutes when Emmie King fired home into the far corner.

United were well on top and created more big chances before the break, Austin lifting an effort over the crossbar before Stewart beat the goalkeeper with a chipped effort which dropped wide.

Izzy Pendlebury made a big save with her feet to deny City an equaliser, but United's pressure continued after the break as Neve Fisher saw a header saved before Stewart was denied in a one vs one.

The chances looked to be coming back to bite the young Blades when City equalised with a curling effort moments later, but Under 16s winger Austin had the final say, lifting a superb effort over the goalkeeper after being played in by King.

The visitors put plenty of pressure on during the final minutes but after two more good saves from Pendlebury, United managed the game out to book their spot in the final four.

Blades: Pendlebury, Austin, Ormiston, Fisher, Lavery, Bonelle, Bell, Stewart, Thompson, King, Day.

Unused: Branton, Rigg, Shore.
