Micah Richards and Alan Shearer have butted heads as they failed to agree on what a volley was as they lauded one of Steven Gerrard's famous strikes.

The Liverpool icon has a huge highlight reel of stunning strikes but Richards and Shearer were watching one of his better known goals, which came against Middlesbrough in 2005.

Gerrard picked up the ball on the right, taking a touch, before striking a bouncing ball which curved into the top corner and past Mark Schwarzer. Richards and Shearer agreed on the quality of the goal, but the ex-Manchester City man disputed the fact it could be classed as a volley.

Speaking on the Rest is Football Shearer began: "That Micah, is a volley," which caused Richards to quip back. "Hold on, are you starting this nonsense again? Its just bounced up for him," he said.

He went on to say: "That is no volley, its a half volley. Its bounced." Richards challenged Shearer again on whether he actually thought Gerrard's strike classed as a volley, to which he replied: "I don't think, I know." Gary Lineker was also present and backed Shearer.

Richards continued to underline the fact he didn't think it was a volley, but hailed the technique. Shearer claimed it was one of the "best volleys he'd ever seen" as he and Lineker continued to gang up on their colleague.

The duo had previously argued about what exactly defines a volley, a debate that harks back to last year when they discussed the issue on a Match of the Day podcast. On that occasion Shearer was stunned that he was having to explain it to an ex-professional footballer.

Richards was adamant that a volley had to be a strike you hit first time, suggesting the technique was to pull it off was unique. Shearer said he "couldn't believe they were having this discussion with a full-back." The ex-City man eventually called on Google to settle the debate.

The trio, whilst discussing Gerrard, also bemoaned the generational debate over England's failure to get the most from the Liverpool star, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes. A constant school of thought was that they couldn't play in the same team, but Lineker maintained they could if the system had been tweaked.
