**Arsenal:** Borbe; Hinds, Wubben-Moy, Codina, McCabe; Pelova, Mariona; Smith, Maanum, Foord; Russo
Substitutes: van Domselaar (GK), Liddiard (GK), Catley, Mead, Little, Blackstenius, Holmberg, Harwood
Arsenal are out of the Subway Cup, losing the semi-final to Manchester United 1-0. For a third time this season, Arsenal were shut out by Manchester United but unlike their two WSL errors United capitalised on an Arsenal mistake to score at the end of the first half and that was enough against a wasteful Arsenal who went down to 10 in the second half.
Renée Slegers made 5 changes to the team that beat Aston Villa on Sunday, with Taylor Hinds, Laia Codina, Victoria Pelova, Frida Maanum, and Caitlin Foord replacing Emily Fox, Steph Catley, Kim Little, Stina Blackstenius, and Beth Mead. Daphne van Domselaar returned to the bench.
Arsenal started well. After Manchester United kicked off, Olivia Smith countered and drove down the field. After beating multiple players, she passed to Russo who had drifted wide, who crossed to the centre. Maanum headed down but straight at Tullis-Joyce, who parried away.
Another cross created a good chance for Arsenal on 12 minutes. From a throw, McCabe crossed for Russo. Le Tissier won the header, but the ball came to Maanum, who blasted over from cross range.
United floated a dangerous free kick into the box but because the camera lens was covered with smudged water, your intrepid match reporter couldn’t see what happened.
Terland broke behind the Arsenal defence, beat Wubben-Moy but then went down under pressure from McCabe but the referee didn’t give a penalty.
Terland got played in behind Codina but Codina recovered and won the ball back with a good stand-up challenge from behind.
On the stroke of half time, Mariona won a free kick on the edge of the ‘D’ but Russo fired the free kick well over the crossbar.
There were 2 minutes added on at the end of the first half.
Manchester United broke the deadlock in the 47th minute after Arsenal coughed up possession in their own box. Codina passed back to Borbe. Borbe took an extra touch and tried to find Mariona, who was under pressure from Wangerheim. Mariona initially held off Wangerheim, but lost out and Terland fired into the far corner. On 47 minutes Hinds and Smith combined to set the latter away. She drove into the box and cutback to find Maanum, whose looping shop went over the bar.
On 57 minutes Blackstenius replaced Maanum, with Russo going to #10.
Ziggioti and Sandberg were both booked for fouling Smith.
Arsenal went down to 10 on 62 minutes. Smith, booked earlier, was late challenging Zigiotti near the touchline and she was given a second yellow. The decision appeared to be harsh as the challenge looked far worse than it was, with Ziggioti mostly jumping over Smith.
Mariona played wide to Russo who played back to Hinds who set Mariona up for a low shot that Tullis-Joyce pushed away for a corner.
Le Tissier was booked on 70 minutes for pulling back Foord.
On 74 minutes Malard should’ve finished the tie. United countered down the right, and Wangerheim played in Malard on the left. With her left foot she shot over the bar.
On 75 minutes Smila Holmberg replaced Taylor Hinds and Kim Little replaced Victoria Pelova.
Holmberg’s first involvement was to make an enterprising run down the right but she shot over.
Russo did brilliantly on the halfway line to turn and slip the ball in for Holmberg, who cut into on her left and saw her shot get blocked behind for a corner. That would be Russo’s last involvement, as she was replaced by Beth Mead.
McCabe, set up by Holmberg, saw her shot blocked, and on second viewing it was blocked by a hand.
Park fired over in a rare United attack as six minutes were added on.
Foord did well against Riviere and crossed for the far post but Mead headed wide.
United first won a free kick and then won a corner in the 95th minute. Then, from an Arsenal throw United won the ball back, and Park drove into the box but saw her shot saved by Borbe. Arsenal, though, couldn’t get the ball back to the attacking half as United saw out their victory.
