Traveling Liverpool fans pelted Marseille forward Mason Greenwood with boos every time the former England international was on the ball during Wednesday's Champions League match at the Stadio Velodrome.

Greenwood, 24, spent the early part of his career playing for Manchester United before he left the club first on loan to Getafe in 2023 and on a permanent basis to Marseille in 2024 due to his controversial past. Wednesday is his first time facing the Reds since he left the Premier League giants.

The ex-Red Devil couldn't do anything amid the boos to stop a rampart Liverpool team from thrashing Marseille 3-0, putting the Reds in a strong position to receive a bye to the UCL Round of 16.

Greenwood, now a popular player for the French giants, wasn't welcomed by all sections of the club's massive fanbase when he joined for £26.7 million ($35 million).

Fans on a prominent Marseille online forum began sharing the hashtag "GreenwoodNotWelcome" alongside posts calling for the transfer to be canceled.

"At a time when negotiations for the arrival of Mason Greenwood are announced as becoming increasingly advanced, it seems necessary to explain, once again and before the damage becomes irreversible, why this transfer seems inconceivable in view of the values displayed by the club and why it would mean for many of us a red line that would irreparably damage the passion that we have for this club," one read.

Greenwood scored 22 goals in all competitions in his first season in France to help Marseille qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2022.

He already has 20 goals for the 2025/26 campaign, including 12 in just 1,358 Ligue 1 minutes. He recorded two shots and made three successful dribbles against Liverpool on Wednesday.

The in-form Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring for the Reds just before halftime when he snuck a free-kick under the wall and past Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to make it 1-0.

A Rulli own-goal after a sensational Liverpool build-up — stamped by a Jermie Frimpong cross — put the game out of reach at 2-0. Cody Gakpo finished the scoring in injury time to secure a 3-0 victory.

The win sees the Reds climb up into a tie for third place with Real Madrid (and sit in fourth on goal difference) in the Champions League group stage.

A victory next time out against Qarabag at Anfield will secure Liverpool an automatic passage to the Round of 16.
