Jamie Carragher says Liverpool 'might' do something extraordinary after statement Champions League win

It was nice to be treated to an emphatic Champions League performance from Liverpool — so nice that Jamie Carragher has made quite the bold statement.

Look, Marseille are a side the Reds should be beating, but if we have learned anything this season, it’s that you can’t take opponents for granted.

Liverpool dispatched Marseille with ease, though, and it has already spurred a change in attitude for many of a Liverpool persuasion.

None more so than Champions League medal-holder Carragher.

Jamie Carragher dares to dream after Liverpool’s Champions League display

It wasn’t just the result that gives hope for improvement for Liverpool. The performance from minute one to minute 90 was superb.

Dominik Szoboszlai made Liverpool history with his free-kick, and defensively, Marseille did little to disturb the flow of the visitors.

After the game, Carragher was on CBS to dissect the tie. He said: “That was a top Liverpool performance. They looked like one of the top teams in Europe and that’s what they should be. They won the Premier League last year, they spent a lot of money in the summer.

“But, you know, they haven’t looked like a top team for a lot of this season really. They have now and again, and a lot of those have been in the Champions League. You think of the Real Madrid game, away at Inter Milan, this one away at Marseille. So, maybe this trophy might be on.”

Anyone dying on the Arne Slot hill has been banking on the possibility of a deep run in Europe to make up for a poor league campaign.

Performances like this one, and the context of how last year’s competition panned out with PSG blooming late, make it feel possible.

Liverpool now need to raise performance against lower-level teams

It’s all well and good doing it on the biggest stage against a tricky Ligue 1 opponent, but Liverpool also need to bring consistency to games like the Burnley one last Saturday.

Or, games like Qarabag — the league phase finale at Anfield next week.

Marseille played an expansive game that gave Liverpool space to exploit. Those low-block sides are a different proposition altogether.

The Reds have one foot in the knockouts, currently sitting in fourth, but that game will be a real test of whether they can replicate this quality against teams more afraid to go toe-to-toe.
