'Amazing': Marseille's Timothy Weah claims there was something unplayable about Liverpool tonight

Liverpool put in one of their best performances of the season on Wednesday to sweep Marseille aside at Stade Velodrome.

Reds fans needed to see a response to Saturday’s drab draw against Burnley and were treated to a complete display by Arne Slot’s men.

The Velodrome can be a difficult place to go, and with Marseille in good form under Roberto De Zerbi, many had predicted a tough match for Liverpool.

But while the French side had their moments, Liverpool were simply a cut above on Wednesday. Superb in all aspects, they thoroughly deserved their margin of victory.

To their credit, Marseille appeared to recognise this, with forward Timothy Weah praising the technical quality of Liverpool after the game.

Timothy Weah impressed by Liverpool’s technical ability

Part of the issue supporters have had with watching Liverpool this season is that the players have been frustratingly below their usual levels.

Many in this Reds team are amongst the best in the world in their respective positions, but have rarely been showing it this season.

Nevertheless, that quality does sometimes come to the fore, with Wednesday being a good example of how good Liverpool can be when it does. Weah was certainly impressed, hailing the Reds’ while speaking to CBS Sports Golazo.

“I feel like technically they’re amazing, so you kind of have to match that,” said the American. “I felt like second-half we came out pretty strong, then the second goal kind of brought the energy down. It’s just a shame.

“I think they [Liverpool] were better tonight, we just have to get back into training and focus on our next game.”

Was Marseille Liverpool’s best display of the season?

There were times during Wednesday’s match when the likes of Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai and Hugo Ekitike really looked like they were clicking.

Wirtz and Ekitike have been on the same wavelength for a while, but seeing more and more of their teammates join in was brilliant.

There is certainly an argument that the performance in Marseille was one of Liverpool’s very best of what has been a difficult campaign.

The display at San Siro against Milan was another highlight, as was the recent stoic showing against Arsenal, but for the complete nature of what Liverpool served up, we think Marseille actually takes the cake.

The challenge for Slot and his players now is to show that technical ability that Weah is eulogising and start showing it on a much more consistent basis.
