Liam Rosenior has revealed why Reece James was taken off at half time against Pafos on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
The Blues ground out a vital 1-0 win against their Cypriot counterparts in a very uninspiring match at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea created a number of chances, but just couldn’t find the breakthrough until Moises Caicedo headed home from a corner late on.
Liam Rosenior explains Reece James substitution
Rosenior made a number of changes to the team which beat Brentford, and James started in midfield alongside Caicedo.
Chelsea created a few chances in the first half with Caicedo and Jorrel Hato testing the goalkeeper, but they couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Rosenior used the bench at half time and introduced Estevao in place of James, with Enzo Fernandez dropping in alongside Caicedo.
James’ minutes have been managed this season in an attempt to keep him fit in the long term, and Enzo Maresca is said to have fallen out with the medical staff over the number of minutes James should play.
Rosenior was asked about the James sub after the game, and revealed it was to do with wanting to keep the England international fresh.
“Yeah, minutes,” he told his post-match press conference.
“And making sure that he’s prepared for we’re playing Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday. And I want to make sure Reece is available as much as possible because he’s an outstanding player and he’s a leader in our group.”
Chelsea hope Cole Palmer will be fit for Crystal Palace
One player who was absent from the match day squad was Cole Palmer, and the Blues will be hoping he’s fit for Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Rosenior confirmed Palmer missed the win against Pafos as he’d picked up a strain, but he didn’t elaborate any further than that.
Palmer has struggled with a groin injury this season, but was also seen with heavy strapping around his thigh against Brentford, and the Blues will hope it really is just a precaution and nothing more serious.
