Liverpool now three points away from eight-figure cash boost following Marseille hammering

Liverpool just produced one of their best displays in months to beat Marseille 3-0 in the Champions League.

Arne Slot’s future remains a key talking point, with the manager himself even asked about Xabi Alonso in the build-up to Wednesday’s tie.

However, at least for now, talk of the Dutchman leaving Anfield any time soon should be quiet following the 3-0 win over Marseille.

Slot changed Liverpool’s system, setting up with a 4-2-2-2 formation, which allowed Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to thrive on the flanks.

Dominik Szoboszlai scored the opener before Frimpong forced an own goal, and Cody Gakpo came off the bench to secure a massive win.

Liverpool close in on Champions League last-16

Not only should it give the players, manager and fans a massive confidence boost, but the Marseille hammering puts Liverpool one step closer to the last-16.

The Reds guaranteed a place in the league phase play-offs before they kicked a ball this week due to results elsewhere.

But competing in the play-offs would mean extra games next month, something Slot is no doubt keen to avoid given his lack of squad depth.

However, Liverpool ended Wednesday fourth in the Champions League table with just one game to play.

Ninth-place Barcelona are two points adrift with a similar goal difference, meaning the Reds still need to win their final group game next week.

That match comes against Qarabag FK, who have picked up just one victory in their last five European fixtures and sit 19th in the table.
