January 22 – Manchester City’s leadership group has decided that if you freeze in the Arctic Circle watching the team slump to one of its most embarrassing defeats in the Pep Guardiola era, the least you deserve is your ticket money back.
After Tuesday’s limp Champions League loss away to Bodø/Glimt, the club’s captains, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Erling Haaland, and Rodri announced they would personally refund the cost of tickets for the 374 supporters who made the journey to Haaland’s home country, Norway. The bill will come in at just under £10,000.
Speaking on behalf of the squad, City’s captains struck a tone of contrition mixed with gratitude. “Our supporters mean everything to us,” the statement read. “We know the sacrifice that our fans make when they travel across the world to support us home and away, and we will never take it for granted. They are the best fans in the world.”
There was also an acknowledgment of just how much commitment the trip required. “We also recognise that it was a lot of travelling for the fans who supported us in the freezing cold throughout a difficult evening for us on the pitch,” the players said. “Covering the cost of these tickets for the fans who travelled to Bodø is the least we can do.”
City also promised a response, saying: “We’re ready to fight on Saturday for our game against Wolves and then again next Wednesday when we face Galatasaray in front of our amazing fans at the Etihad.”
