Forget Ekitike and Wirtz: 'Crazy' Liverpool star has quietly become one of Slot's best players - opinion

Liverpool’s summer signings are now largely excelling, with a number impressing in the recent win over Marseille.

Hugo Ekitike has been the most consistent of the new additions, sitting as the Reds’ top goalscorer this term.

Florian Wirtz was heavily criticised when he first arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, but the German is now impressing on a weekly basis and has added goal contributions to his game over the last month or so.

Like Wirtz, Milos Kerkez was not at his best when he first arrived at Anfield from AFC Bournemouth this past summer.

But the Hungarian has now put to bed any potential doubts people like Roy Keane, who called Kerkez ‘crazy’ for a mistake made in September, may have had.

Milos Kerkez has become one of Liverpool’s most important players

Kerkez responded to criticism after yet another starring display against Marseille on Wednesday evening.

The left-back said he uses the negativity as fuel, and it has clearly paid off.

Arne Slot changed Liverpool’s system against the French side, playing a 4-2-2-2 that required his full-backs to provide much of the width.

It was a tactic that allowed the Reds to produce one of their best displays of the campaign and got a lot more out of both Frimpong and Kerkez.

Liverpool fans praised the left-back heavily during the 90 minutes, while his defensive counterpart forced an own goal.

But this is not the first game the former Bournemouth man has shone in of late.

Gary Neville gave a positive Kerkez verdict after the 0-0 draw with Arsenal, and he has continued to grow into this Liverpool team, excelling at both ends of the pitch.

Wirtz and Ekitike will, more often than not, make the headlines as they will provide more goals and assists simply due to the positions they play.

But the importance of Kerkez’s addition cannot be understated, especially given Liverpool could lose their long-time left-back in the summer.

Milos Kerkez could have new left-back competition at Liverpool

Andy Robertson has hinted at leaving Liverpool this summer when his contract expires at the end of June.

The Scotsman is still playing semi-regularly but has become the second choice behind Kerkez.

When Robertson leaves, the Reds may welcome back an old favourite to act as backup to the Hungarian.

It emerged recently that amid his difficult AS Roma loan spell, Kostas Tsimikas will return to Anfield this summer.
