Jamie Carragher couldn’t help but smirk as he suggested Liverpool could go all the way in the Champions League this season.
The Reds are well placed to qualify for the last-16 after easing to a 3-0 win over Marseille on Wednesday. Dominik Szoboszlai set the tone with a free-kick just before half-time, before Jeremie Frimpong forced an own goal and Cody Gakpo rounded things off during the second period.
The victory leaves Liverpool fourth with just one game to go in the league phase, and with Qarabag visiting Anfield next week, Arne Slot’s side is in the perfect position to avoid an extra play-off tie next month.

While the Reds’ struggles have continued in the Premier League with four straight draws, including another disappointing showing at home to Burnley last weekend, they have demonstrated themselves as one of the favorites in the Champions League, having beaten the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan before last night’s win in France.
And Carragher isn’t betting against them delivering a seventh European title, with the former Liverpool defender unable to hide his true colors as he gave his verdict on CBS.
“That was a top Liverpool performance,” Carragher said on the win over Marseille.

“They looked like one of the top teams in Europe and that’s what they should be. They won the Premier League last year, they spent a lot of money in the summer.
“But, you know, they haven’t looked like a top team for a lot of this season really. They have now and again, and a lot of those have been in the Champions League.
“You think of the Real Madrid game, away at Inter Milan, this one away at Marseille. So, maybe this trophy might be on,” he added as he smirked, drawing a boisterous response from Micah Richards.

Slot though isn’t getting too far ahead of himself, with the Liverpool boss instead just focused on wrapping up a top-eight finish that could bring about a major benefit to his side.

“It’s very important because we have had to play with the same players because of injuries for most of the season,” Slot said.
“That could be the reason why we have run out of energy in some of the games when we’ve conceded.
“I don’t think Virgil (van Dijk) has had more than three days off, the same for Ryan (Gravenberch) and others but they constantly show up no matter how many setbacks we’ve had this season.”
