Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has fired a promise after his Marseille goal was ruled out during their 3-0 win in the Champions League.

The Frenchman was denied an iconic celebration during the triumph over the Ligue 1 side after straying offside before slotting beyond Geronimo Rulli. Ekitike joined up with Dominik Szoboszlai and saluted each other with their hands over their faces, but following an intervention from VAR, the goal was chalked off.

The Hungarian opened the scoring with an exquisite free-kick before a Rulli own-goal doubled the lead and Cody Gakpo rounded off the scoring after coming on to replace Ekitike.

In a post to his Instagram, Ekitike shared a snap of the celebration with the caption: "Keep that one for the next time."

The summer arrival was a threat in an important win for Liverpool and Arne Slot as they moved into the automatic qualification places. It means that they need a point to secure their place in the Round of 16 in next week's visit from Qarabag as the League Phase of the Champions League draws to a close.

Results on Tuesday night meant that Liverpool had already qualified for the next stage of the competition but it was down to the Reds whether they would book their place in the knockout phase or be forced to play a two-legged playoff to reach the last-16.

Liverpool moved 13 matches unbeaten thanks to their comfortable win over Marseille and it was a glimmer of the Reds returning to their best having endured a string of draws following the end of their dour run.

Pressure has been building on the Dutchman, despite only guiding Liverpool to top-flight success six months ago as performances and the manner of some results have resulted in criticism for the Reds.

They sit one-point clear in the top four with Manchester United and Chelsea pushing to break into the Champions League places.

Slot was in fine form following the routine performance in southern France as he aimed a tongue-in-cheek jibe at Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

In response to the former defender's question around a change of formation of late, he said: "I find it hard to listen to you, Jamie, because you are the one who told me I have to make sure we didn't concede that much.

"So I started to do that (change his formations on a regular basis) and people began to complain it became boring, so I'm not sure if I should listen to you."

Slot added: "We score three and now, people like Jamie are positive about us. I don't think you were positive after the Burnley game, were you, Jamie?"
