Chelsea great Marcel Desailly believes Cole Palmer could hand in a transfer request if he doesn't think the Blues can claim Premier League glory inside the next two years.

Palmer has been the best signing of the Todd Boehly era, which has seen a number of expensive players fail to deliver. His £40million move from Manchester City proved to be excellent business and he has shone since being a guaranteed starter.

However, Chelsea themselves are not involved in the title race with their remit, once again, being to land a spot in the Champions League. The 23-year-old has recovered from a groin issue and return to his usual role, but Desailly fears he may want to go to a club who will build around him.

There has been inevitable talk of a return to the Etihad whilst Manchester United, who Palmer grew up supporting, have been cited as a possible landing spot with Desailly open to the possibility of him wanting out.

He told Card Player: “The question is whether he feels like Chelsea are going to win the Premier League in the next two seasons. If he doesn’t, I’m sure he will ask for a transfer request to a club that will build a system around him."

The former Blues skipper went on to add: “If Cole Palmer decides to move away from Chelsea then that’s his business, but I just want him to respect the club, because they are the ones who have given him the tools to become the player he is now.

“I would love him to stay at Stamford Bridge because he’s got a key role in the team, even if Enzo Maresca used him in various positions. I believe Palmer wants more stability and a system that’s built for him, but he still needs to fully recover from his groin injury and get back to full fitness.

“His recent performances speak for themselves, so he needs to stay humble and come back into the team to help the club, regardless of whether he stays or goes.”

Palmer scored 25 times in his debut season in west London and has made serious contributions with England. Chelsea have another new man at the helm in Liam Rosenior and his impact, coupled with how he uses Palmer, could have a huge say in what the future holds for the Blues and their playmaker.
