Barcelona’s board of directions have decided that the [next presidential elections](/2025/5/16/24431369/joan-laporta-confirms-plan-to-run-for-re-election-after-barcelona-win-la-liga) will be held on March 15th, according to RAC1.
The date is virtually the earliest the elections can be held in 2026 and falls on the weekend that Barcelona are due to take on Sevilla in La Liga.
Joan Laporta is hoping to be re-elected as president but faces competition from Victor Font, Xavi Vilajoana and Marc Ciria who have all announced an intention to run.
The current president has previously spoken about his intention to continue and why he feels he deserves to continue.
“We’ve made difficult decisions, we’ve worked under pressure. It’s been an important year in the club’s recovery, and I’d like to run in the next elections,” he told RAC1.
“I believe this project, which I have the honor of leading, deserves to continue. We made brave, courageous, and controversial decisions, and we’ve moved forward, both to stop this campaign of institutional discredit that has taken hold in some sectors, especially among rivals.”
Laporta has faced fierce criticism from Font over recent years but won 54% of the vote last time around, with Font taking 29.99%.
