Dominik Szoboszlai admits Mohamed Salah offered up free-kick taking duties and he was determined to step up after clocking that Marseille didn't have anyoine behind their wall before he scored.

The Hungarian opened the scoring in France just before half-time with a smart free-kick. The Liverpool midfielder stepped up and drilled a low strike underneath the opposition wall, which jumped, but with no one behind it rolled into the back of the net.

Szoboszlai has come up with some stellar strikes, especially from dead-ball situations since moving to Anfield. His effort to see off Arsenal an example of what he can produce, but Salah remains an influential figure and also stood over the free-kick at the Stade Velodrome.

The midfielder opened up on his discussion and told TNT Sports: "Well we will always discuss it. He asked me if I want to take it, I said yes because I checked if no one is laying down I'm going to take it under the wall. He said 'OK then take it' and yeah I scored."

Szoboszlai also added: "I did my homework and got told that if no one is lying down, then maybe I can have a chance to hit it under the wall. No one was lying down so I tried it and it worked out."

Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi, formerly in charge at Brighton, admitted it was a "silly goal" for Marseille to concede and they failed to get back into the contest. The Ligue 1 side put through their own net as Liverpool doubled their lead before Cody Gakpo made it three in stoppage time.

The game in France was Salah's first since returning from AFCON, where he and Egypt saw their hopes ended in the second-half. He left under a cloud after taking aim at the club following several matches out of the starting side, but Szoboszlai was thrilled to see his return.

"I'm really happy that he's back," he said. "He's helping the team on the pitch but off the pitch as well. As you know I'm really close with him, and I just like to play with him because he showed so many times that he has the quality to change games. And even though he didn't have a goal or assist today, still he was working hard. Sometimes you have to close our eyes and work hard for the team and probably next game he will score or assist someone."

Liverpool's win was their fifth in seven games across their Champions League campaign, which currently has them in the top eight and facing a straight route into the last 16.
