OPINION: Arsenal Should Reignite Interest In £87m Chelsea Target To Solve Gyokeres Issue

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has struggled to find consistent scoring form since joining from Sporting CP in the summer.

The Gunners come off a 3-1 win against Inter in the Champions League, in which Gyokeres was able to find the net for just the eighth time this season.

Many expected the Swedish target man to be somewhat of a goal-machine in Mikel Arteta‘s side, but it hasn’t happened like that. Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting last year, but has so far managed just eight in 25 games for the Gunners.

Gabriel Jesus is now challenging him for the striker spot, putting Arsenal back in the same position they were before, looking for a goal scorer up front.

Arsenal should hijack £87m Chelsea move and sign ex-Man City star

Recent reports have said that Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Chelsea are interested in signing Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez in the summer, as they are looking for a reliable forward option.

The Gunners were linked with Alvarez in 2024, as they were looking for a number nine with Premier League experience, however, he ended up moving to La Liga and Atletico Madrid instead.

Alvarez has shown that he can deliver in the top leagues, as he has impressed both in the Premier League and in La Liga, so why wouldn’t Arsenal consider going for the Argentine if they still want to sign a world-class goal scorer.

The 25-year-old has made 84 appearances since moving to Madrid in 2024, and he’s since scored 40 goals, and provided 13 assists. He also spent the previous two years at the Etihad, and scored 36 goals in 103 games.

It is understood that Alvarez is open to returning to the Premier League amid Chelsea’s reported interest. However, Barcelona are also keen, so he could opt to stay in La Liga, and join the current table toppers instead of returning to England. Either way, Arsenal should consider re-igniting their interest in the 25-year-old, as he’s a proven Premier League goal scorer.
