The Hidden Role Arsenal’s William Saliba Played in Nwaneri’s Move to Marseille

The Gunners are heading into their next game against Man United having not made any January signings yet this window. However, they have so far seen two players leave the club on loan deals.

Firstly, Oleksandr Zinchenko has joined Ajax on loan for the rest of the season after his loan at Nottingham Forest was terminated, as he’d made just five Premier League appearances for Forest, since joining in the summer.

Ethan Nwaneri has also left. He has joined French side Marseille on loan for the rest of the season, in search of more regular game time under Roberto De Zerbi.

Saliba played a part in Nwaneri’s loan move to Marseille

The 18-year-old is hoping that he will get more league and European experience by joining Marseille, as he made just six Premier League appearances for the Gunners so far this season. The likes of Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze joining in the summer, reduced his role significantly.

It is understood that Arsenal defender William Saliba had a part to play in Nwaneri’s move to the French side. Nwaneri spoke to Saliba, who spent a year on loan at Marseille during the 2021/22 season.

Upon joining Marseille, Nwaneri said in an interview via Fabrizio Romano on X: “William Saliba told me OM is one of the best clubs in the world. Roberto De Zerbi is also one of the best coaches in the world.”

Saliba spent a year at Marseille, making 36 Ligue 1 appearances. He earned valuable experience at the French club, and a year later, became a regular starter for Arsenal. Nwaneri will hope to do the same as his fellow Gunner.

Could any other Arsenal players leave?

Earlier in the January window, defender Ben White was linked with a move to Premier League rivals Everton, but that was quickly shut down, as Arsenal want to keep hold of the English full-back.

However, midfielder Christian Norgaard could see a potential January move, as reports in Holland say that Ajax are hoping to land him this month as he has hardly had the chance to play for Arsenal in the Premier League this season.
