It’s not the greatest time to be a Crystal Palace fan after the historic FA Cup triumph last season. Former captain and defensive rock Marc Guehi has already departed to Manchester City for £20m. Striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who bagged has eight Premier League goals this season, has explicitly told the club he wants out amid strong Juventus interest.
As if that wasn’t enough, manager Oliver Glasner has publicly confirmed he’ll walk away when his contract expires this summer, a decision he made back in October. That would be three pillars of the club’s recent success potentially gone within months. But the bad news continues to come for Palace fans.
Back in November last year, DaveOCKOP.com exclusively revealed that Liverpool were keen on midfield general Adam Wharton, with the Reds even holding preliminary talks with the England international’s entourage. Wharton has also been a player whose profile has exploded over the past couple of seasons, and interest ahead of the summer window is believed to be high.
We also revealed that the 21-year-old would prefer a move to Anfield should a move in the summer materialise – and that move is looking increasingly likely. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have all been credited with an interest in Wharton, while Real Madrid have also been mentioned by Spanish reports.
With the mass exodus out of Crystal Palace at the moment, expect Wharton to want to move on for a fresh challenge in the coming months. DaveOCKOP.com can reveal that the midfielder is still a target for the Anfield club this summer, and interest will likely ramp up as we head towards the end of the campaign. Talks are expected to start at around £65m.
The South London side pushed the boat out to get Wharton in the first place. They beat off serious Premier League competition to land him from Blackburn Rovers in a deal worth an initial £18m, rising to around £22m with add‑ons – huge money by Palace standards for a Championship player at the time.
He doesn’t necessarily grab headlines with goals, but he dictates tempo, breaks lines with his passing and regularly tops the charts for touches, passes and distance covered.
