Chelsea eye loan move for Juventus’Douglas Luiz

Chelsea are considering a move to sign Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus for the rest of the season, per [The Athletic’s David Ornstein](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6991039/2026/01/22/douglas-luiz-chelsea-transfer-forest/).

The 27-year-old is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, but he has only played 13 times for the Tricky Trees since joining the club last summer.

He joined Juventus from Aston Villa for a reported fee of £42.3 million plus £1.5m in add-ons in the summer of 2024 but struggled to impress during his stay at Turin.

A hamstring injury disrupted the former Villa midfielder’s rhythm earlier this season.

Also, since Sean Dyche replaced Ange Postecoglou as Forest head coach in October, he has started only twice in the Premier League.

The Tricky Trees’ loan agreement includes an obligation to buy if Luiz reaches a set number of appearances, along with a £26m option should he fall short.

Meanwhile, Forest boss Dyche said last month that Luiz was “enjoying his time” at the club, despite his lack of first-team minutes.

“It’s down to him as much as us,” said the former Everton boss when quizzed on how Luiz can find his feet at the City Ground. “He knows that.

“He’s an experienced pro, and he understands where he needs to be at to perform. He is a very good player, without a doubt – we have all seen that. He certainly seems to be enjoying his time here at the moment. Long may that continue.

“He’s another one who was very unlucky when we got here, being out with an injury. But he is a talented player. He is adapting to what we do, albeit he has had a spell out. But he seems to be – and he tells me he is – enjoying life here.

“He is a good player, and we want him to play when he can do so. But we have to make sure he’s right. He is still not quite there, but he is getting there, that’s for sure.”

Chelsea are aware and monitoring the Brazilian’s situation closely, as they are in the market for a midfielder to cover the continually injured Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo.

Enzo Fernandez is also battling with a knock, while Cole Palmer has been unable to string a run of games together due to a groin injury, so a short-term loan deal for Luiz could be ideal for the Blues.
