Russell Westbrook has had a productive season in his first year with the Sacramento Kings. Through 45 games, he leads his team in assists, rebounds, and threes and is second in points and steals.
Westbrook’s journey to Sacramento was not an easy one. During the 2024-25 season, Westbrook was a member of the Denver Nuggets. After the season, he declined his player option and became a free agent. As the summer progressed, no teams expressed interest in signing Westbrook and going into the fall, Westbrook was not on a team.
Sacramento signed on Oct. 16, 2025 to a one-year minimum contract salary. The wait was over for the 2017 MVP Award winner. Fast forward to present day, Westbrook is one of the top players on the Kings and is having a productive season.
Russell Westbrook Making the Most of His Opportunities
Despite waiting all summer and some of the fall, Westbrook stayed ready for any available opportunity. When Sacramento came, Westbrook was ready and he has made the most of his time with the Kings so far.
Through 45 games, Westbrook is averaging 15.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. In year 18, Westbrook continues to show how much of an impact he is on the court. Earlier this month, he became the all-time leader in points by a point guard, passing Oscar Robertson. Westbrook is a competitor and is the type of player who gives their all every time they step on the court.
This season, Westbrook has recorded 10 doubles-doubles and four triple-doubles. Westbrook may not be as young as he was before, but he continues to stuff the stat sheet. When Westbrook became the all-time leader in points by a point guard, the Kings paid tribute to his accomplishment.
“Gratitude, grateful… it’s a unique thing when you have for me, family, close friends, support your journey,” Westbrook said. “I haven’t seen some of those highlights in a while… I’m just grateful to share this experience with the fans, share it with my teammates.”
Russell Westbrook Has Put Together an Impressive Career
Westbrook has put together a Hall of Fame career and when he decides to walk away from the game for good, he will be considered as one of the best to ever play. He has spent the majority of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and there he quickly established himself as an elite player.
He was an eight-time All-Star with the Thunder and on an MVP award. Westbrook is the only MVP winner to average a triple-double during the season. After his time with the Thunder he spent one season with the Houston Rockets and was named an All-Star.
He’s bounced around the league a bit, playing for the Washington Wizards, the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Denver. Westbrook could walk away from the game right now and still be a Hall of Fame player. That’s how much of an impact he’s made on the game and the respect that he has throughout the league. He has put a lot of time and effort in this game and his hard work has paid off.
