Chelsea are said to be pursuing a loan deal to bolster their midfield.

Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on Chelsea’s reported pursuit of an out of favour Premier League midfielder. The Blues are largely concentrating on adding a centre-back in this window, with Liam Rosenior wanting a new defender to finally plug the hole left by Levi Colwill’s summer injury.

But beyond that, Chelsea are also said to want a new midfielder on the cheap, and it seems a loan deal will be the ideal solution.

Not only do the Blues need to be careful with Financial Fair Play, but they do have the likes of Dario Essugo and Romero Lavia to call upon, albeit the latter is struggling with injury. Chelsea won’t want to block their path to game time in the long term ,but they do need more depth now, with both players having struggled for fitness this season.

Providing an update on the situation, Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Douglas Luiz is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus. It’s a loan deal with an option to buy that could be an obligation at the end of the season depending on certain conditions like the appearances of the player. These appearances are not being made because Sean Dyche does not see Douglas Luiz as a crucial player.

“This is why the camp of the player and the owners of Juventus are considering a new loan arrangement like returning the player to Juventus and loaning the player to another club.

“The club now trying to make something happen is Chelsea. Despite some calls from Aston Villa, Chelsea are the club who have called to understand if it’s possible to do a loan deal for Douglas Luiz with no obligation to buy.

“It’s important to know that Chelsea don’t want any obligation to buy, they want eventually the option to buy but not an obligation to buy. Chelsea have Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and more players like Andrey Santo, but Lavia and Essugo have had many injuries, so they want one more midfielder. Chelsea wanted the deal in 2025 but the deal was not possible, Now Chelsea again are interested and are in contact with the player and Juventus. They want him on loan to provide depth to the midfield.”

Emery praise for Luiz

Some of Luiz’s best football came during his Aston Villa days, playing a key role in Unai Emery’s early time at the club. Speaking back in 2023, Emery said of the midfielder: “Today I am very happy with Douglas Luiz. His skill, characteristic in the squad is very important.

“Every match he is very focused on how we can manage 90 minutes keeping ball possession, keeping good positioning, taking our time with our central midfielder and his characteristic is necessary in this team. Today was the match, I think, overall with the performances, was the best with us since I arrived here.”
